Dining out
French Cuisine in Southern France
There are a few places to eat in the village. They are:
- Le Prieuré Resto/Creperie: simple fresh food and delicious crepes, salads and grills.
- La Petit Vigne: A small dining room located in the chambre d’hotes at the entrance to village. This establishment is operated by two young Englishman who provide a daily special menu plus an a la carte menu.
- Hostellerie Fenelon: A larger dining room in the Hostellerie Fenelon located on the main road that traverses the village. A reasonably extensive menu of local cuisine. The menu is usually displayed in a glass case at the entrance to the hotel.
- La Bodega Calypso: Located on the main road (D43).
These restaurants tend to open only during the busier months of the year, generally from about Easter (or April) through to October.
Dine Out in Other Villages in the Lot
Eating in the south of France is a great adventure. The Lot is well known for duck, nuts, honey and of course the famous local cheese known either as Cabecou or Rocamadour.
You can eat simple country cooking in the many bars, and small restaurants located throughout the area or you may wish to try some of the fine dining recommended the book Bonnes Tables du Lot (on the table with the tourist information). Many auberges (inns/hotels) and hotels have good dining rooms also.
The following are just a few of the places in which we have enjoyed good food and wine:
- Le Beau Site: located 22 kms from Carennac at Rocamadour. Address: BP 1 – Cité Medievale, 46500 Rocamadour, Tel: 05 65 3363 08
- Hostellerie Belle Rive Dumont: located 11.2 kms from Carennac at Port De Gagnac, 46130 Gagnac, Tel: 05 65 38 50 04
- Auberge du Vieux Port: also located 11.2 kms from Carennac at Port De Gagnac, 46130
Gagnac, Tel: 05 65 38 50 05. - Les Trois Soleils De Montal: located 14.2 kms from Carennac on the road to St Céré. Tel: Le Kiosque – located 38.1 kms from Carennac in Brive-La-Gaillarde at Place Jean-Paul-Lartigue. Tel: 05 55 23 27 73
- Le Ballandre: this hotel restaurant located at Cahors (the capital of the Lot) is quite a trek at 92.3km from Carennac but very good fine dining. Combine lunch with a day trip exploring this beautiful town. Address: 5 avenue Charles de Freycinet, 46000 Cahors. Tel: 05 65 53 32 00.
- Figeac: A little further afield at 53.8 kms from Carennac but definitely worth considering is Figeac. Figeac developed from the founding of a Benedictine abbey in the 9th century. There is much to see in Figeac including an enlarged replica of the Rosetta Stone. The route from Carennac to Figeac goes through the beautiful lush countryside of The Lot.
- Gouffre de Padirac: 10.5 kms from Carennac is the Gouffre de Padirac – an underground cave/grotto. After descending into the cave you take a boat trip through the underground canals, followed by a guided walking tour. There are lifts for easier access however there is still a reasonable amount of climbing steps but it is a wonderful adventure. Telephone: 05 65 33 64 57.
